Description

David Hall's freshman work places the reader with three friends in a small, west-Texas town in 1962. A farmer must face the harsh reality of a son who longs for a different life and a farm that is failing. A teacher works to free her students from the grips of factory work so their dreams may be realized. A preacher struggles against the demons of war and the darkness of doubt to find his way back to God. All three must work together to help a young girl who arrives in the small town with lots of baggage and a secret of her own. Their only hope to show her God's love and forgiveness is to accept it for themselves before she runs again. Find out if they are successful in time in Three Wooden Crosses.

This book had a great voice, a great message and a really unexpected and touching ending. I have read a number of non-fiction Christian books, and what I was impressed with almost immediately in this story was not that the main character was having a crisis of faith - but that he was so steadfast and sure in that crisis of faith. While he was still going about the life of "a good Christian" - as a pastor, even - he was empty of the true feelings of faith and hope and God's love. I feel that a lot of Christians have had that season, and will resonate with the feelings that not only Matt, the main character, but a number of other characters as well, at different levels.I also liked the fact that the antagonist was steadfast in being his own God. Don't get me wrong, I am a Christian and know that this is a strange thing to say or like, but it made sense to me as a reader. There will always be people in our journey that are sure that they are right, come what may, and that don't appear to need God. And the fixes are not always as quick and filled with a flash of light and understanding like many other Christian authors appear to believe. The "bad guy" remained the "bad guy", and you knew how shallow and empty that his life likely was because of it.I won't talk about the twist at the end for obvious reasons. However, I will say that the book left me with a feeling of peace and a renewed sense of grace (and don't we all need that?).I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to more work from this author.
